How To Download & Install a Plugin on WordPress

Downloading and Installing Plugins on WP 4 Beginners

Plugins on a WordPress website a fairly common. Web-masters use plugins for a majority of things on their websites from functionality to collecting leads.
Now the WordPress platform has many free plugins available but sometimes you are just wanting a plugin that is that little bit extra.
These types of plugins, free and paid are bountiful amongst third party developers and depending on what you need you can generally find what your looking for.
So today I am not going into the deep realms of plugins. What I want to do with this post is show beginners how easy it is to install a plugin onto their website from a third party developer.

Now before you more experienced computer and internet savvy users jump up and down and scream

“oh gee every-one knows how to do that”

Step back and shut up; not everyone grew up with a computer in their cradle and for some of us, growing up, like myself computers were only existent in sci-fi movies set in the future.

Beginners Guide to Downloading and Installing Plugins

So you have purchased or found a plugin outside of the WordPress platform.

Now how do I get it onto my website?

Step 1. Make sure you are on the correct plugin page and you should see a download button. Click on that button

Step 2. In your computer window that has opened up choose where on your computer you want to put the plugin file. Remember where you put it.

Step 3. Log into your website and choose plugin – add new and wait for page to load.

Step 4. See the button at the top of this page that says upload, click on this and wait.

Step 5. Your computer window will have opened and you can now select the plugin file you downloaded early. Once you click on it and upload the plugin file is now on your website.

Step 6. Activate your plugin.

Okay so that sounds pretty simple I know but for some it can be daunting and challenging.
To help you even more I have recorded this short video of me doing this live with a third-party plugin on one of my WordPress websites.

“How To” Video Tutorial-Plugins

I have tried to keep this very simple for those of us who have basic computer skills and internet skills.

If this post and video has helped you in some way please leave a comment below and share with some-one you know who is looking for help on a basic user level.

As always have an awesome day. Do things you are passionate about and share your knowledge with others.

Subtitles for YouTube Videos

Subtitles/Captions on YouTube Videos

If you have ever been to YouTube to watch videos on a regular basis you may have come across subtitles on videos.

You may have noticed some are in gibberish, annoying and they have spoiled your user enjoyment of the YouTube video.

You may or may not know how to turn captions on/off as a viewer and so just avoid the YouTube videos with captions/subtitles.

One Big Mistake on YouTube Videos

The biggest mistake I see quite often with YouTube videos and it is one I am guilty of as well, is that as a channel owner we do not set our subtitles/caption options correctly. What does this mean well simply put when we upload our videos the subtitles could seem to be gibberish.

So let us all take a moment to familiarise ourselves with our user dashboards on YouTube to make sure we don’t make simple mistakes that take away from our visitors user experiences.

So I have done a short tutorial video that walks through the basics of subtitles/captions on YouTube videos from both sides of the fence.

As a YouTube visitor/viewer and as a channel owner.

Please enjoy this short video and please show my channel and blog some love by liking, commenting and sharing with your circles.  Have an awesome day and be kind and respectful to yourself and others

If you would like to see some more how to videos on other things please rock on over to my contact page and let me know or place your request in the comments below. Thank You for your time and visit to my on-line home.

In the next blog post we will delve into the advanced settings in our YouTube manager and show you how to edit your captions in your uploaded videos so it makes sense.  So Be sure to transcribe or follow my blog for the next training tip on captions

Welcome to WordPress 4.3

WordPress 4.3 makes it even easier to format your content and customize your site.

Have you updated your WordPress website to WordPress 4.3, are you even going to. As web-masters it is our responsibility to run our WordPress websites and tend to the general sometimes mundane task of ensuring a functional healthy website.

I am no expert web-master and I enjoy the ease of running a WordPress site so I generally go with the WordPress flow and update my website fairly quickly.I am not privy to all the pro’s and cons as to why you should or why you shouldn’t.

I just know for my own ease of having a good functional site for people who land on my website I generally update my WordPress fairly quickly and to date this task has served me well and allowed me to get on with the other tasks at hand of running a website and building my business.

So here is some relevant information from WordPress on the new update to WordPress 4.3 and the benefits and changes you can expect.

Formatting Short-cuts

Screen snippet showing WordPress 4.3 formatting short-cutsYour writing flow just got faster with new formatting short-cuts in WordPress 4.3. Use asterisks to create lists and number signs to make a heading. No more breaking your flow; your text looks great with a * and a #.

The formatting short-cuts I am enjoying although at this stage I have only played with the WordPress 4.3 update for about an hour but the short cuts are proving time value.

Site Icons

This is a pretty cool feature that has been added with the new WordPress update that I am yet to use, but you can bet I will most definitely give this one a whirl

screen snippet showing the new site icon feature of WordPress 4.3Site icons represent your site in browser tabs, bookmark menus, and on the home screen of mobile devices. Add your unique site icon in the customizer; it will even stay in place when you switch themes. Make your whole site reflect your brand.

Better Passwords

Keep your site more secure with WordPress’ improved approach to passwords. Instead of receiving passwords via email, you’ll get a password reset link. When you add new users to your site or edit a user profile, WordPress will automatically generate a secure password.

Menus in the Customizer

Create your menu, update it, and assign it, all while live-previewing in the customizer. The streamlined customizer design provides a mobile-friendly and accessible interface. With every release, it becomes easier and faster to make your site just the way you want it.

A smoother admin experience

Refinements to the list view across the admin make your WordPress more accessible and easier to work with on any device.

Comments turned off on pages

All new pages that you create will have comments turned off. Keep discussions to your blog, right where they’re supposed to happen.

Customize your site quickly

Customizing your WordPress website quickly and smoothly has always been a bone of contention but this new feature to come through in the update if it works as it says it is supposed to, it will certainly go a long way in squashing this conversation.

Wherever you are on the front-end, you can click the customize link in the tool-bar to swiftly make changes to your site.

There are a few more tools and features that came through with this update and many I have not had the chance to experience yet but all in all from my own perspective so far I have welcomed this reason fresh WordPress update with more smiles and phew than complaint.

Have you updated your WordPress website yet and if so how are you finding the new update. What do you like or even dislike about it. Please feel free to share your experience and opinions in the comments below.

Have a great day.

How to Deal with Troll Reviews on Facebook Fan-page

Facebook Fan-page and Troll Reviews

Facebook has long been touted as the king of Social Media when it comes to getting your business/brand out there.
Come to Facebook they say, build a fan-page they say, share your business brand to the world they say, yeah right!

Look there is no doubt having your business showcased on a Facebook Fan-page can be beneficial to your brand, as long as you know what the hell you are doing. I can tell you from my own experience it is not that simple. Yes it use to be, but not so much any-more.

You see over time the members on Facebook grew and so did the fan-pages, which means less and less exposure for your brand on Facebook as you are now competing in a savvy marketing arena. So to be even slightly successful you will need to be a little bit savvy in your marketing knowledge and how it applies to your business brand Fan-page on Facebook.

Today I am not going into the logistics of being successful with your business Fan-page on Facebook.

Today I would like to help you with one of the most common complaints for owners of Fan-pages and how to solve this problem.

Fan-page Reviews – False/Troll Reviews and how to Remove them.

How do I stop letting people post ratings and reviews on my Page?

  1. Click About below your Page’s cover photo.
  2. Click Page Info in the left column.
  3. Hover over the Address section and click Edit.
  4. Click to un-check the box next to Show map, check-ins and star ratings on the Page.
  5. Click Save Changes

Or if you Prefer You can watch me “Show You How” live in this Video Tutorial

This is to date the only way you have of dealing with a troll who has landed on your Facebook Fan-page and is trolling the hell out of you in the reviews section of your page. You will need to switch it off whilst you converse with Facebook to have the matter permanently resolved.

Now I know a lot of people will tell you to block this person from your page and if this action worked the way we would like it to it would be a good solution. The problem with doing this is you will no longer be able to see any future troll reviews they make and it doesn’t stop them from starting 5 or 6 fake profiles and hitting you even harder.

From my experience with Facebook Fan-pages the review section of the page doesn’t really help your page get seen or noticed and has no bearing on your fans, so I am of the opinion it is best left off your page which gives your Fan-page a cleaner look and feel and is one less thing for your fans to be confused by.

Remember at the end of the day it is all about what you can do for your fans more than what they can do for you. So I am going to say it

“in my opinion, it comes down to content and the old adage content is king”

If having a review page is important to you then build it on your website so you have control over it and can moderate all reviews. This will stop troll reviews and plain slander and untruths being displayed publicly on your Facebook Fan-page.

Sitemap for Beginners -xml

In this Guide to Sitemap XML, we will

  • Briefly explain what, why and how of a sitemap xml.
  • Give 2 plugins to use that make it easy
  • Show how to generate sitemap xml with 1 of the plugins
  • Show how to submit your sitemap xml to Google

So let’s dive straight into the basics of a sitemap xml on your website. Now if you’re at the beginner level and you’re sitting there scratching your head and saying to yourself. “Sitemap xml, I don’t even know what that word means”  then stick with me for a moment and by the end of this blog post you have a basic understanding of what the sitemap for a website is and why this is so important to, your website, your business and your future marketing campaigns.

What is a Sitemap?

What I understand from the loads of information out there is, a sitemap xml is basically a map of your website that is needed so your site can be easily read and navigated by the search engines. Okay so that means I will need a sitemap for the search engines to read if I want my website to be found. That is how I understand what a sitemap is.

There is an easy explanation over in Wikipedia which basically says a site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for Web design, or a Web page that lists the pages on a Web site, typically organized in hierarchical fashion.

You can read the full article by clicking on the word Wikipedia or click on the Wikipedia logo below this section.

Why Have a Sitemap?

Well to me that is obvious, now I understand what a sitemap xml is. I need a sitemap on my website for the simple reason of being found by the search engines like Google, Bing etc. so when people type in a search word or term my website has a chance of being displayed in the list to that person.

So having a sitemap for my website makes sense from a beginner’s point of view, but then the next thing your thinking is, well how do I go about doing that?

How to Generate a Sitemap?

Now this is another subject about sitemaps where there is tons of information and not all is good quality easy to understand. In fact for a beginner to the world of having a website, some of the information on generating a sitemap can be downright confusing and made of word that seems to speak in code.

To be honest when I first started my research in the early days on the subject of generating a sitemap for my website, I was left so overwhelmed and frustrated at how little I actually seemed to know that I left sitemaps behind and just didn’t bother with it for a long time.

I hope to save many beginners out there the same feelings of helplessness and stupidity that I felt in those early day of setting up my own website.

Now let’s get to the meat of the sandwich. If you are anything like me then you have probably opted for the easiest way to set up a website and discovered the WordPress platform.

A place where the absolute beginner to websites and even web designers themselves can make use of an easy website building platform that can create a website for you with just a couple of clicks.

So this How to Generate a Sitemap section will take place within a WordPress website platform.

Now the nifty thing about WordPress websites is things called plugins and it is in the plugin area that you will find what you need to easily create a sitemap for your website. There are 2 plugins I have used on my WP websites and recommend.

The first one is WP SEO by Yoast WordPress SEO plugin for creating sitemap

Yoast Website

this is super easy to use, works well and also does some other things for your website as well. So it is a plugin that has multiple uses based around SEO for your WP website. You can find and install your WP SEO plugin by going into your plugin section, choosing add new and doing a search for WP SEO or you can follow the link below. I currently use the free version but am thinking about upgrading to the paid version.

The second one is Google xml sitemaps Google xml Sitemap plugin

this plugin basically just does the one thing, it generates your xml sitemap for your website. Make sure you choose the right one when searching for this as other developers have named their version almost the same. The version you are looking for is by Arne Brachhold just like in the image above.

Instructions on Generating Sitemap XML

  1.  Install one of the plugins
  2. Activate plugin
  3. Go into the settings or dashboard area of plugin
  4. Follow instructions inside the plugin
  5. Click on Generate sitemap
  6. Follow instructions to find sitemap
  7. The sitemap page will have a bunch of url’s that finish in -sitemap.xml
  8. Copy the code at the end of your sitemap url
  9. Go to Google Webmaster Tools
  10. In left menu click on crawl.
  11. Choose sitemap
  12. A page will load and in the top right area you will see a red button that says Add/Test Sitemap
  13. Click to open box where you enter the end part of the sitemap url and click submit.

This should automatically take and your sitemap has been offered up to Google successfully. Yes you will need a Gmail account to do this and I suggest you keep those login details safe because you can also create your Google analytic account with that same email address.

Now that is all done your next step will be to create your sitemap navigation page which is very simple. All you need to do for that is create new page. Tittle the page Sitemap and on the page in list form put your most important pages and then hyper-link each of those pages back to their original partner page on your website. Don’t know what Hyper-link is never mind, the image below should explain this for you.
